Poof! Dry Skin Be Gone: a Review of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

Hi everyone! We’re kicking off this week with a guest review from one of my favorite beauty junkie friends, Jennifer Polito.  Hope you enjoy her product review below!

Guest beauty blogger, Jennifer Polito

Like many women, I have struggled with combination skin since my teen years. In addition to the occasional pesky breakout I have an oily T-zone and a dry chin area.  Once I got the acne under control I tackled the combo problem. I have tried everything from buying the latest over-the-counter products to seeing a dermatologist and getting pricey facials, nothing took care of the problem so I learned to live with it.

Two months ago my sister sent me a care package and inside were samples of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I started using the essential oil (just two drops) at night before I went to sleep. The next day my chin was softer and after three days I notice my chin area was very smooth and not dry at all. I began applying the light oil to my entire face. It even calmed my oily T-zone. Was it possible an essential oil could combat my shiny forehead? I also love the scent – it reminds me of stepping into a spa treatment room with all the amazing oils they have.

I have been using this product for two months and I love it. I simply apply two drops to my face nightly after I wash my make up off and go to sleep. It doesn’t stain my pillows or leave a greasy residue. My makeup goes on with ease every morning and I don’t have to touch up during the day. Applied at night it nourishes your skin while you sleep and the product is made with essential and botanical ingredients like evening primrose oil that is rich in Omega-6 and essential fatty acids that help to repair your skin. The product also contains squalane, a botanical lipid similar in molecular structure to natural skin lipids. Translation: it contains what your skin needs to look its best!

I recommend this product to anyone with dry or combination skin. I’ve noticed I don’t need as much makeup and even brave a makeup free face from time to time!

You can buy your bottle of Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate online at www.kiehls.com for $43.

Once You Go Bronze with Bare Escentuals, You’ll Never Go Back!

This blog is dedicated to a group of fabulous Vegas women who have supported me and my beauty blog since day #1.  You know who you are! Thanks for the “jumpstart,” no pun intended.
It’s been a scorching summer across the country, 106 degrees in Las Vegas today.  I had previously written a blog about SPF but you should also know that I’m a huge believer in the art of faux tanning.  Especially since it’s been almost unbearable to lay out here in desert!  So in times when the heat gets too hot, I go for the faux tan.
Faux Tan by Bare Escentuals by far gives one of the most natural looking, non-orange, non-smelling, golden tans out there.  I purchased mine on QVC.  It came with its own kabuki style brush (not pictured) which ensures even and fast application.  As with any other self-tanning product, prepping your skin is essential.
Here’s a great tip! You can use this all over, including your face because it doesn’t clog pores and its sensitive skin friendly.  Blend one pump or less with your daily facial moisturizer.  This product does such a great job at looking like a real tan, I encourage you to try it and test it by photographing yourself after you apply, it’ll look like you just got back from a Caribbean vacation! I also love that it dries quickly, no chance of it rubbing off on your wardrobe.
Here’s to looking bronzed all year long!

Victoria’s Secret’s Beauty Rush for Lush Lips

I recently purchased this new lip gloss by Victoria’s Secret called Beauty Rush with SPF 15 for $7. I bought the Mega Melon and it gives me the perfect summery pink/peachy tone that goes with my skin color. They have variety to choose from but I wanted something I could wear day and night. The gloss goes on smooth and most importantly, it’s not sticky.  It lasts a long time and leaves my lips feeling conditioned. While the specs of glitter give your lips some attention, the SPF 15 is a great bonus to fight off those harmful sun rays.

This lip gloss is also perfect for giving you that gloss to match your tan after a day at the beach.  It smells and tastes great too!  Have you tried any of the other colors?

GTL: Golden and Tanned in Las Vegas

Ok that’s a stretch! I attribute my love of tanning to my Jersey roots. The Coca-Cola and baby oil tanning sessions are no more and while I don’t have the same love for going to the gym or doing laundry, I still love getting my summer tan on – in the safest way possible.  I have tried so many sunscreen products, always on the hunt for that perfect one that gives UVA and UVB protection, one that moisturizes without being greasy and gives great color.  I’ve tried everything from carrot-based lotions for the golden glow to oils from my trips to Mexico and the Caribbean, anything I could find that was different from the products sold at the local drugstore.

Now, in my 30’s, I want more from my sunscreen!  Recently, I came across some great online reviews for Carol’s Daughter, Gelee de Soliel Browning Oil and thought I’d try it out.  It has SPF 15 (which might too low for your first time out in the sun).  It’s also enriched with Palm Kernel Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Mango Butter and Avocado Butter.

INGREDIENT BENEFITS: (some descriptions are from Sephora.com)

  • Palm Kernel Oil – Provides excellent moisturizing properties while leaving skin soft and youthful.
  • Cocoa Butter – Protects and nourishes the skin with natural oils that deeply penetrate into the skin.
  • Shea Butter – Renowned for its moisturizing properties, shea butter is rich with fatty acids your skin will love.
  • Mango Butter – Natural emollient and lends protection against the sun. Also reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores elasticity.
  • Avocado Butter – Contains antioxidant vitamins A, E and D, which kill free radicals that age your skin.

I bought Carol’s Daughter Gelee de Soliel Browning Oil at my local Sephora about a month ago.  I’ve only used it a couple of times so far and already love the non-greasy golden glow if gives me while moisturizing and protecting my skin from the sun.  The scent is more nutty than tropical and it’s NOT waterproof, so reapplication is necessary. Although I’m not really looking forward to the 100+ degree Vegas heat, I’ll need to stay cool and protect my skin from the harsh desert sun.  Here’s to fun in the sun!

What’s in my makeup bag?

This is my first contributor post so I’d figured I’d start by giving you more than a sneak peek into my makeup bag!  I like to keep my beauty look very chic but the application process very simple. Here goes. I start off every day with using my Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer with SPF 15. I have been using this moisturizer for about three years now and it works great with my dry skin and the oil-free formula does not make my skin feel greasy or cause breakouts. I then use Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Concealer in Sand to cover any blemishes and under eye dark circles. Then for some color, I use Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Powder foundation in Medium Sandy Beige applied with MAC kabuki brush #182. On to the lashes, I use my Shu Uemura eyelash curler (which I just heard was discontinued so I will soon be on the search for a new eyelash curler that works well with my stubborn eyelashes!) and Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara in Extreme Black. I finish my look with CoverGirl Liquilineblast in Black which makes a super smooth sleek black line on my top lid – making my eyes look brighter and bigger (also an Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner). The pencil also has a rubber side to smudge the liner for a more dramatic look. On my lips, I use Blistex DCT lip balm to keep my lips conditioned and smooch-soft!

Please let me know what’s in your makeup bag and if we share any products in common! Any suggestions on a good eyelash curler are welcome!

Dull, Dreary Skin? Mario Badescu to the Rescue!

Hautelook recently had Mario Badescu on sale and because I’m such a fan of the Summer Shine Moisturizer or what I like to call “Beyonce in a Bottle,” I decided to buy a cleanser and facial moisturizer.  I also bought product because my skin was in need of some serious rescuing.  I was breaking out and taking antibiotics for bronchitis, I was a mess and my face was paying for it.  After getting a microdermabrasion treatment, the dermatologist recommended exfoliation and hyaluronic acid.  The Mario Badescu sale came a perfect time!  I bought the Glycolic Foaming Cleanser and Hyaluronic Moisturizer.

Mario Badescu Glycolic Foaming Cleanser and Hyaluronic Moisturizer

While I’m a loyal user of Philosophy Purity and it’s the only cleanser I’ll use with my Clarisonic, I’m also a true believer is supplementing a regimen that needs a boost once in a while.  I needed the boost and needed it badly.  The glycolic foaming cleanser definitely removed buildup, exfoliated and instantly removed the makeup off my face and left it feeling so clean and refreshed.  I’m going to use it twice a week in between my regular regimen.

I followed it up with the hyaluronic moisturizer, which is non-greasy and has Vitamin A peanut oil as well as SPF 15, which is essential out here in the desert.  It left my skin supple and feeling super soft!  As we get closer to summer, I think I’ll try a more intense moisturizer, but this combo is perfect for spring!
